Brainstorm Egg By Haemi Yoon

When it comes to brainstorming on a design project, computer aided design is the default technological interface that we use. But in the larger creative world, design interfaces differ vastly with the interfaces traditionally used in pottery design being different from that being used in designing home furnishing and auto design and so forth. The Brainstorm Egg by Haemi Yoon looks to find a common platform which can enable designers to integrate sensuous stimuli like space, various interfaces, different activities, system behaviors, human gestures, affordances and physical objects in the process of creating new ideas.

The project is basically a communicator that can interact with various interfaces during ideation providing users the ability to remember details during a group discussion. The project operates on two levels, using a projector and the egg to provide a common interface for interaction.

The high-tech projector is roughly the size of a coin which allows for greater portability and allows designers to present ideas on various everyday surfaces and virtually anywhere. This liberates people from incurring the cost of getting people together in a specific place for a presentation.

The Egg itself is a touch-enabled multi-surface interaction tool with a menu tool that helps users take advantage of the built-in texture scanner, camera and microphone that can record ideas in various formats to be presented later. An accelerometer is also built into the Egg that detects motion and allows greater flow of interaction during a presentation.

The integration of the projector and the egg will form the bulk of the interface that will contribute immensely to the creative process. Easy access to saved references, the ability to view past inspirations and the capacity to visualize ideas as they are formed helps speed up the brainstorming process. It would also allow users to “save” inspiration or ideas as they occur to them without having to physically write them down or input in a computer.

The interesting phone has been wedged with equally impressive features that will make your eyes do a somersault. The handy device ingeniously swaps a physical interface into an invisible one.

The surface of this beautiful ring is touch-sensitive and comes embedded with a camera. This can be used to make video calls with the help of a projector. The designer has skillfully injected communication into a small ring. The futuristic phone has been given a sleek and dainty facade. It will attract a lot of people because of its lightweight nature. Hitch is a new way of capturing memories for family events. Paired cameras allow greater integration and ease of access to a range of shared photos taken by others at these events, both online or on the day. Paired devices can upload photos by placing on dock and photos from other cameras can also be shared via cardslot of bluetooth connection. These are aimed to provide a more sustainable and improved experience from the current disposable cameras which are often left on the table.

KLEXL Interactive Painting Machine By Dario Jandrijic

If you don’t wanna curb the graffiti artist in your tot, German designer Dario Jandrijic has developed an Interactive Painting concept dubbed the “KLEXL” that lets kids express themselves without spoiling the living room walls. Essentially a smart projector, the painting machine allows digital wall printing with an IR tracking camera that you can clean up with ease after your tot is done with his/her masterpiece. Replacing the crayons with light pens and creative blotches with light pixels, the KLEXL not only allows graffiti on the wall but also saves them to re-project years later to cherish early creativity of your toddler.

Mozilla Seabird By Billy May (video)

Look up, peasant, from your soot-stained hands. Drop that shovel into the furrowed ground and gaze upon the magic* that Mozilla has wrought. Concept designer Billy May, working through Mozilla’s “Open Web Concept Phone” project, has gathered community feedback and followed up on some rather mundane visions for the mobile future with this little beauty, the Mozilla Seabird. The completely fictional device has a disturbing initial resemblance to a BlackBerry Storm, but as the video unfolds the functionality is really what sells this thing. The big innovation is the use of dual pico projectors on the side of the handset, which can provide different functionality based on the phone’s orientation: flat on a table they pump out the two halves of a QWERTY keyboard, up on a dock they offer the dual purpose of a large viewing screen above and a seamless projected keyboard below. Other features, like the pop-out wireless pointer / Bluetooth headset are slightly less realistic but no less charming. Now, before you get too excited, you should know that Mozilla has no plans to build this or any phone, they’re just messing around with some fancy 3D software and the bright imagination of their community of users. Still, for the two minutes and thirty seven seconds that the video after the break unfolds, allow yourself to think: “What if?”
