The past few years have brought amazing innovation to mobile phone design, with the iPhone leading the way and competitors introducing new features in an attempt to dethrone it. This concept video from China introduces the Line Phone, a remarkable and slick-looking phone with some very awesome features. However, much like the concept cars that are unveiled every few months, there’s no plan for this phone to enter production anytime soon. Heck, the video itself is just a render of what the phone could be like rather than a prototype in action.

Real or not, this phone is still worth plenty of “ooh”s and “ahh”s. Starting off with traditional Chinese music and a calligraphy theme, once the phone is introduced we get shiny blue light and explosions. Pretty cheesy, yes, but that’s quickly forgotten. The wafer-thin phone is shown with a strangely elongated design, looking to perhaps be about 3:1. Split vertically down the middle by an on-screen line, the main menu has a scroll bar on the right which can be manipulated by touch. Turn it sideways and open up your music app and you get to browse your albums and songs. Sliding your finger along the edges lets you edit volume, fast forward, and even do some DJ scratchwork.

The part I find most interesting is the use of gestures, much like the mouse gestures found in Opera or as an add-on for Firefox. Type up a text message and then slide your finger vertically to send it off. When reading a new message, you can do a sort of checkmark gesture to bring up the reply screen. A gesture along the outer edges of the phone will even let you re-edit the message you sent. The Internet browser looks painful, although their example of Facebook browsing seems to work. The size and dimensions of the screen seem as if they’d make any realistic web surfing awkward at best. Picture browsing and photography are shown next, with typical zoom and edit features, although again using the edges of the phone to do these tasks.

The trend
In recent past, social networking has emerged as a popular medium, especially among gen-next, to interact with friends and associates and discuss their day-to-day or business activities. Making the most out of the new trend, designers are working on different portable gadgets that promises a better platform for social networking not only within the our walls but on the move as well. The “Blackberry Empathy” by designer Daniel Yoon is an identical phone concept that apart from regular verbal communication also enables the user to go through the activities and updates of their friends, while reading the emotional state, using a biometric ring, of the wearer.

The Inspiration
Communication technologies may allow interaction on an entirely new level; still users feel cramped to communicate their true feelings on certain occasions. Intended to integrate the concept of social networking with human emotions, the new cellphone employs biometric technology to sense and share the true feelings to ensure a better communication among users.

What makes it so special?
Based on the idea of a mood ring, the futuristic cellphone allows quick status updates to help you know who is ready for a conversation and who is busy and cannot be disturbed. Connecting the user straightaway to popular sites like Facebook and MySpace for quick and enhanced messaging, the Empathy includes proximity sensors that let you sense the emotions of the occupants when you enter the room, as the emotion chart converts the feelings into a visual timeline. The concept phone also features movable keys, translucent tactile keyboard and flexible OLED screen, together with heads up display (HUD), double sided screen (clamshell) and slide-out split keypad to enhance the experience of the user.

Reflecting the deeply divided paradox of human nature and emotions with its asymmetric form, the Empathy integrates a keypad that changes color according to the emotional state, sensed from messages and phone calls, as the biometric ring transmits the body signals of wearer and sends data to the main device for interpretation.

What’s in it for me?

With Empathy Phone, now you will be able to sense and respond to the real feelings of your friends, associates and family members, through popular social networking sites, in a better way. The new Blackberry phone is easy to operate, as one can easily adapt to it. All you need to do is just pick the phone, wear the biometric ring and then log on to any social networking site to sense the feelings of your friend. In case, you don’t wanna share your deep emotion with others, you may avoid it by simply removing the biometric ring.

What’s next?

The concept of Social networking through portable devices is already popular among the masses, but the biometric technology will just take it to another level. And with latest innovations in technology, the day isn’t too far when you would be able to do live video chats using your mobile handset on the go.

The latest trends and designs in the cellphone industry have simply outclassed the landline phones in the past few years. Reviving the grandeur of the desk phones, German designer Ronny Sauer has developed a stylish phone dubbed the “Hello Tomorrow” that comes with an adjustable interface that users can optimize individually at home or in the office to meet their personal needs. Embedding a clear display on the receiver, the phone concept gives access to all the functions, even when the receiver is docked in the phone. In addition, the sleek, trendy design of the table phone goes hand in hand with the decor of contemporary places.
FlexClick – Media Phone Concept that aims at solving current issues associated with touchscreen devices: lack of tactile feedback, finger stress, difficulty typing and lack of precision. Under the curved Soft Touch display lies a matrix of microswitches, these activate based on displayed content and can only be pressed where you expect to find a button or control. The dial phone concept is another outcome of the recent tradition of minimizing size and shape of cell phones through repeated development. This phone concept utilizes the traditional dial-phone technology combined with a beautiful design like a fashion accessory. When making a call, users have to unfasten the phone from their wrist and place it on any surface where it can project number characters from the ten interior holes. The upper dial contains sensors that respond to the user’s finger when selecting any particular number to call. Aside from great functionality, the designer focused on designing a fashionable, sporty and elegant ornament with ultimate uniqueness.
Mac Funamizu is a name you’ve surely heard before, if you’re into Apple-related concepts and hot designs, so here’s his latest work: a mobile device using double glassy layers. The issue of fingerprints is present as usual, but the beauty of the handset is impressive, although some of you might think it lacks personality because of its transparency.
The first Android smartphone, T-Mobile G1 was last week’s star for sure, but how about the concept phones that should have been the Google Phones? Here’s a brand new one for you, designed by Eduardo Altamirano Segovia. The concept device is based on the interaction of the screen’s centerline with the user’s thumb.

This G-Phone features an OLED screen and a curved front surface, plus an accelerometer that detects the handset’s position and changes the functions of the “call-hang” or “yes-no” buttons. It’s a great design that will maybe make it to Google and HTC’s drawing board, as they start working on the next Android device.
We see lots of concepts daily, but few of them are those unique ideas that will change the future of cellphones. One such idea comes from Tao Ma, a name you’ve heard lots of times on Concept Phones. This time it’s the Sony Ericsson Ring Phone getting all the praise, as it won the SE design competition from China in 2004.

The device is as simple as it is beautiful: just hold the ring close to your ear to answer a phone call and draw out the microphone as you use the handset. Call this a mini-cellphone, a gizmo, a contraption, your favourite Sony Ericsson, but one thing’s for sure: you don’t see designs like these every day…
