Glance mobile phone design is based on the idea where we utilize our mobile phone to read the time, calendar, emails, text messages, and social network updates. Usually, you have to get your cell phone out of the pocket just to read the time or check incoming mails. Glance objective is to design a cell phone which allows you to do all those activities without the need to take out the phone from your pocket.

Glance has a 4-inch OLED screen made from scratch-resistant glass in the front. Its complementary 2-inch OLED screen displays the current status of the mobile phone (time, battery level, new emails, tweets, notifications, sms). It features two cameras: one on the front and another one on the back with integrated flash light. It has built-in mini USB connection, 3.5 mm headphone jack, camera shutter and volume/zoom button. Just like its name, you can see everything you need at first glance with Glance mobile phone.
Slyde company has introduced a unique digital watch HD3, developed by designer Jörg Haysekom (Jorg Hysek). Watch is equipped with LED touch screen (OLED possible option) with moving vertically and horizontally different virtual screens. User can choose whatever background and layout he wants with a touch of a finger.
Watch case is made of titanium and sapphire glass – they are strong enough and can work under water, at a depth of up to 30 meters. There is also charge indicator on the side of the watch body. It features applications to view photos, its own calendar, but it has no media player. Maybe Slyde decided not to duplicate functions that everybody has on their cell phones or iPods.
Flexible gadgets are undeniably sexy – but Japanese electronics giant Sony wasn’t content stopping there. For their newest display, they decided to also throw in ultra-thinness (just 80μm or a bit thinner than a human hair) and the energy-saving power of OLEDs into the mix. The new prototype is so bendy that it can be wrapped around a pencil. From electronic newspapers to LED garments, just think about the applications such a display could be used for!

The new prototype is a huge step up from their last iteration, which Gizmodo reported to be only slightly bendy. According to PCWorld, the new screen contains innovative organic thin-film transistors that are used to make the driver circuitry to run the display. These transistors are capable of being produced directly on a flexible substrate, eliminating the need for rigid driver chips that would prevent the screen from being bent.

The new OLED display measures 4.1-inches wide with a contrast ratio of under 1,000:1 and a resolution of 432 x 240. And this is crazy – Sony says that this new OLED panel can continue streaming video while rolled up or stretched!

The US Army is testing a prototype wrist watch designed by L-3 Display Systems of Alpharetta, Georgia. The new display model uses efficient OLED materials that are lightweight, flexible and have long enough lifetimes. The watch has been made from newly developed energy efficient phosphorescent material that converts electricity into red, blue, and green light. Although there has been no worn on the power consumption specs it is believes that the device uses just one-fourth the power of a conventional OLED.

The watch’s flexible electronics is encased in a rugged plastic case that can be worn on the wrist. The 4.3 inch display makes for a thinly rough communications device that can display maps, stream video and other information without adding too much weight to the overall load. The US army has been testing these prototypes to stream real-time video from unmanned air vehicles.

In the efforts to satisfy our visions of the future, the relationship between technology and sustainability is a pressing issue of concern at all the levels. This is the reason why designers are increasingly moving towards sustainability to bridge that gap. In yet another example of blending technology and sustainability, a designer has created a sustainable mobile communication device dubbed as Infinite. The device clearly looks like a Windows phone 7 device from the interface along with a touch screen feature. According to a brief by the designer, this sustainable mobile phone has a life expectancy of 5 years along with super quick charge time, 8.1MP camera, WiFi, 360 OLED screen and 32GB memory with an upgradeable feature. Featuring the casing in Kenaf bio plastic, this device is fully recyclable and biodegradable. Whilst deeply deploying the pursuit of sustainability, the designer has maintained the essential and luxury user requirements to conform with today’s fashion.
A clock is essentially a time machine in that it is our only connection with time as we travel through it. Taking the clock one step further, designer Christie Brashers has designed a watch that can actually take you into the past and future. The watch disguises itself as fashionable wrist wear until touch-activated by the time traveler. It first shows the traveler which point in time he is currently in as the dots disappears and the date becomes visible. Before traveling, he selects a destination in time by scrolling his finger along the blue lines to shuffle through the year, month, day and time of day. When each time specification is determined, he is launched into space. Using OLED and digital scroll technology, the time traveler’s watch is more than just a timepiece that literally steps into the future.
Drawing inspiration from old science fiction movies, South Korean designer Ungnoh Yoon has come up with a unique mobile phone dubbed “Matrix phone 02” that blends conventional design with contemporary technology. When the cellphone is closed, it looks like an old fashioned beeper or mobile device, but as soon as you slide the upper side, the Graphen display, one of the next gen technologies, pops up to change the mobile phone into a futuristic device. Featuring a compact size, the old futuristic phone just measures 140 (opened) and 90 (closed) x 50 x 15 mm (HWD). When closed, the Matrix phone shows a green OLED light to indicate simple and basic information like time, caller ID, quick dial info and so on, while on the other hand, when opened, the Graphen screen displays all the other information.

Conceived by designer Lisa Kohanski, the “Tripod” is a functional MP3 player that comes integrated with an OLED display to become a movie player. All the users needs to do to transform the Tripod from a music player to a movie player is turn the MP3 player upside down and pull the two halves apart while holding the release button.

The hinge unfolds and locks after you loosen the OLED screen, to steady the unit. You may remove the MP3 control, which can be used as a remote to control the movie player without leaving your seat. The triangular device also supports surround sound with built-in speakers located at the top.

Sony just barely updated the PSP but designer Tai Chiem is already thinking about the next iteration. His design calls for a flexible OLED display that can be conveniently rolled. An electric charge powering the display stiffens it while providing near bezeless prime real estate for gaming. Stereo speakers on either side double as a jog wheel and camera control. He also envisages Sony finally implementing two joysticks. Pipe dream or not, it’s sexy and lives up to its name; it don’t get any more portable than this.
