Digital development tools are an integral part of design and construction processes. m • pad is a Tablet PC that is optimized for the needs of designers and developers. It combines the advantages of intuitive multi-touch operation with the precision of a pressure-sensitive pen. Ooh! hit the jump for more.
Electronic waste, like computers being thrown out to be replaced by new ones every 3 or 4 years, is a very ubiquitous and recurrent phenomenon in modernized societies. We all have or have had electronic equipment that has become obsolete and/or has reached the end of its useful life for whatever reason.
Designer Wataru Watanabe feels that he has found a solution to this global dilemma as far as computers are concerned. His Clear PC concept is designed to increase the life span of mobile computers and improve their sustainability by fitting them with a smart upgrading system and an OLED display screen and stylus input that will minimize the need for peripherals.
While not all of us agree with the use of RFID-enabled identification cards, it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to stop them from becoming mainstream. But if it’s going to become a widespread reality, they might as well be as awesome as possible. It looks like these OLED ID cards from Samsung, featuring a holographic picture of the owner’s head, come as close to being awesome as an ID card ever has. In fact, it’s so futuristic we might even be tempted to flash our IDs when it’s not entirely necessary.

Samsung Mobile Display’s Specimen Display Card looks normal until it gets up close and personal with an RFID reader. Then the OLED display pops up with a graphic of your disembodied head. The 3D graphic is supposed to give authorities a 360-degree look at the card holder, presumably helping them to verify the card holder’s identity more easily. The viewer would also be able to zoom into the displayed face, giving them a chance to compare birthmarks, eye color and other characteristics that don’t come across so well in the standard ID photograph.

Flexible gadgets are undeniably sexy – but Japanese electronics giant Sony wasn’t content stopping there. For their newest display, they decided to also throw in ultra-thinness (just 80μm or a bit thinner than a human hair) and the energy-saving power of OLEDs into the mix. The new prototype is so bendy that it can be wrapped around a pencil. From electronic newspapers to LED garments, just think about the applications such a display could be used for!

The new prototype is a huge step up from their last iteration, which Gizmodo reported to be only slightly bendy. According to PCWorld, the new screen contains innovative organic thin-film transistors that are used to make the driver circuitry to run the display. These transistors are capable of being produced directly on a flexible substrate, eliminating the need for rigid driver chips that would prevent the screen from being bent.

The new OLED display measures 4.1-inches wide with a contrast ratio of under 1,000:1 and a resolution of 432 x 240. And this is crazy – Sony says that this new OLED panel can continue streaming video while rolled up or stretched!

Conceived by Mexican designer Veronica Eugenia Rodriguez Ortiz, the “Yuxa” is a cellphone concept that you can wear around your wrist like a watch or a bracelet. Removing the sound with vibration, the wearable cellphone works with Bluetooth technology, which the user need to remove from the wrist to make a call. Made from ecological materials such as plant fibers and biodegradable plastic, the green gadget features an OLED display and rechargeable battery that flattens its shape with the wrist movement of the user. You can set vibrations at different frequencies for different users. In short, the Yuxa allows an altogether new way of communication.
If you too don’t agree with Kopernikus, Swiss designer Matthias Pugin has devised a unique wristwatch named “Dawn” that instead of the sun places the wearer at the center of the universe. But unlike traditional watches, the Dawn works with an OLED display and displays time with the pictograms of the sun and the moon, which revolves around your wrist. As it takes some time to learn how to exactly read the time, the watch also displays time in the traditional way. As soon as you are able to tell the time just by looking at the position of the sun or the moon, you can switch from showing the time to showing the date.
The RollTop is a flexible notebook concept that can be folded like a roll of paper allowing the user ultimate convenience of carrying and storing it even in a congested place. It features a 17” flat-screen OLED display when fully rolled out with the multi-touch facility that will offer the ease and functionality of that of an iPhone. Also, when required, it can befolded into a 13” smart tablet pc. Aside from the touch-screen controlling, it features full fledged keyboard like conventional notebooks with which convenient typing can be performed. Whenfolded, this compact notebook takes the size of a water carrier and can easily be hanged over the shoulder with a hanging belt.
The Spy watch isn’t meant for a secret agent, but takes the optical brand Spy into an arena that they have never explored before. As designer Smith Newnam explains, “I chose Spy Optic for their stylish and well defined image. A watch seemed like a natural choice, as another form of functional, wearable fashion accessory.” The timepiece features a watchband made from polyurethane and sports an OLED display just underneath the surface. For extra safety, the watch closes by a double clasp mechanism. The spy logo that you see on the watch is actually a button for navigating the settings.

Smith Newnam’s says,

“The Spy watch is a concept I developed as a branding and styling project. The goal was to examine an established company and develop a product that was not featured in their line, but still expressed the essence of the brand. I chose Spy Optics, since they have a defined style and unique approach to sunglasses. I thought their market could reasonably expand to include watches, and so I developed a watch concept.”
