A good few hundred years ago, messages from royal courts were delivered to other kingdoms via scrolls. However, with time, communication technology has evolved by a few leaps but principles behind some of the designs follow the same old patterns. Keeping this thought in mind, an India-based designer, Sudhanwa Chavan, has created a space-saving roll-up cellphone concept. Named as i Roll, this innovative cellphone concept is sure to make waves in the modern world.

Slightly bigger than a pen, the concept takes this cellphone design to a whole new level via a scroll-like design that would allow the gadget to be neatly rolled up. You can even carry this gadget just like a pen in your pocket or handbag as it doesn’t take much space. Users will also be able to make and receive phone calls via a flexible headset. In addition, the cellphone features a retractable OLED touch screen that will provide all the requisite functionality, and when not in use, it will remain folded inside a central column. This outer casing will also be made up of an OLED surface that will display vital information like incoming phone calls, mails and messages. The column will also change colors to indicate the battery status and will be fully used as per an individual’s needs.

The i Roll will additionally feature a fully functioning 360-degree rotating camera operating on ratchet mechanism and will be tweaked to be compatible with 3G services. The bottom end of the Bluetooth-enabled phone concept will house an expandable memory stick, thus, making the phone usable as a standalone thumb drive with USB connectivity as well.

How often do we misplace our cellphone at home and public places and how much time we spend in locating it? The answer to these questions would most likely be ‘very often’ and ‘quite a lot’. Here is a cell phone idea designed for Samsung by Johan Loekito that solves our above problems. This cellphone is detachable with a wristband acting as its dock. A proximity sensor would make the wristband emit a tone or vibrate if the phone is too far away from it. Similarly we could find the missing phone just by pressing a button on the wristband. Moreover this phone would also be capable of detecting contacts close by using the same device, thus allowing us to set our privacy and location details. Now if only this phone would be traceable even in silent or switch off modes, it would be of any use.
The Transducer Mobile Phone Concept breaks down the language barrier by being the perfect translator between you and the other caller. It has this cool function that allows all incoming calls to be translated to your preferred language and vice versa. Amongst other features like GPS, transparent LCD and mesmerizing color effects, you can use the phone to communicate with the hearing & sight impaired folks. Far-fetch but a concept we’d love to see become reality.

With majority of cellphone users looking for multiple functions in mobile handsets, the focus of smartphone designers has been shifting towards touch sensitive phones that can meet communication as well as multimedia needs through a single device. The popularity of touch sensitive handsets can well be measured with the fact that over 20 different touchscreen-enabled phones, though with diverse form and functions, have been released in past two years. Taking the mobile phone technology, evolving day after day, to a new level, designer Julius Tarng has come up with an innovative cellphone called the “Modai” that seems to forge emotional bonds between the user and electronic devices by persuading human behaviors and pushing the limits of mobile technology.

What makes it so special?

Featuring a simple, ergonomic and unique design, the Modai offers a brilliant full screen, a muscle wire peel stand and sturdy aluminum body to allow superior communication wherever you go. Capable of following the user’s needs, the futuristic cellphone provides two paradigms, Fundai (social) that filters and delivers the social content and Prodai (work) that shows all the content you need to succeed in your professional endeavors, to balance both the social and work front. To add more, it includes a dynamic, human user interface, the Modai OS, which gives you exactly what you want anytime, anywhere. Furthermore, Modai proposes an area in the UI called the “Concierge” that delivers contextually relevant content based on previous usage and habits in different times and locations.

And the peel stand lets Modai move physically by itself, expanding the possibilities of tangible interaction with the user. The graphical avatar of Modai visually represents its status, including the paradigm you’re in, in case you are on a phone call, and the battery life. Sounding the alarm at its apex, the device gets up slowly, to wake you up, which you can snooze by a slight tap on its face. Moreover, the cellphone lifts its face up, down or nudge you in the pocket to attract your attention towards the received text message, call or contextual suggestion. Integrating modular, upgradable internals, Modai circumvents the problem of outdated technology, for the user can simply peel back the peel stand and pull the tab to release internals and add new flavor to the hardware with ease.

What’s in it for me?

Exploring an advanced user interface and industrial design of a mobile device, the Project Modai proposes different ways to humanize actions by following the interaction between the human beings, while modular internals ensures a friendly ecosystem between the user and the manufacturer. Besides, Modai attempts to lengthen and enhance the relationship between the user and device by forging an emotional connection.

What’s next?

The modular and emotional characteristics of Modai cellphone has paved the way for a new genre of gadgets, which is not only intuitive and versatile but also sensitive and expressive, bringing the man and technology more closer to each other than ever before.
With the latest technological advancements, features and functions of mobile phones change more frequently than any other portable gadget available on the market, as we see something different and new in a cellphone every few days. Conceived by designer Jim Chan, the “Nokia 2030” is a phone concept that presents an illuminated touch sensitive keypad to allow fast and easy messaging. Featuring a body finished in reinforced scratch-resistant glass, the futuristic phone comes with full-color display capabilities to enhance the experience of the user. Measuring 2 x 4.75 x 0.25 inches (WLH) in dimensions, the Nokia 2030 also attaches colored films, at the rear, to change its color, while polished titanium case protects the screen from scratches.
The trend
In recent past, social networking has emerged as a popular medium, especially among gen-next, to interact with friends and associates and discuss their day-to-day or business activities. Making the most out of the new trend, designers are working on different portable gadgets that promises a better platform for social networking not only within the our walls but on the move as well. The “Blackberry Empathy” by designer Daniel Yoon is an identical phone concept that apart from regular verbal communication also enables the user to go through the activities and updates of their friends, while reading the emotional state, using a biometric ring, of the wearer.

The Inspiration
Communication technologies may allow interaction on an entirely new level; still users feel cramped to communicate their true feelings on certain occasions. Intended to integrate the concept of social networking with human emotions, the new cellphone employs biometric technology to sense and share the true feelings to ensure a better communication among users.

What makes it so special?
Based on the idea of a mood ring, the futuristic cellphone allows quick status updates to help you know who is ready for a conversation and who is busy and cannot be disturbed. Connecting the user straightaway to popular sites like Facebook and MySpace for quick and enhanced messaging, the Empathy includes proximity sensors that let you sense the emotions of the occupants when you enter the room, as the emotion chart converts the feelings into a visual timeline. The concept phone also features movable keys, translucent tactile keyboard and flexible OLED screen, together with heads up display (HUD), double sided screen (clamshell) and slide-out split keypad to enhance the experience of the user.

Reflecting the deeply divided paradox of human nature and emotions with its asymmetric form, the Empathy integrates a keypad that changes color according to the emotional state, sensed from messages and phone calls, as the biometric ring transmits the body signals of wearer and sends data to the main device for interpretation.

What’s in it for me?

With Empathy Phone, now you will be able to sense and respond to the real feelings of your friends, associates and family members, through popular social networking sites, in a better way. The new Blackberry phone is easy to operate, as one can easily adapt to it. All you need to do is just pick the phone, wear the biometric ring and then log on to any social networking site to sense the feelings of your friend. In case, you don’t wanna share your deep emotion with others, you may avoid it by simply removing the biometric ring.

What’s next?

The concept of Social networking through portable devices is already popular among the masses, but the biometric technology will just take it to another level. And with latest innovations in technology, the day isn’t too far when you would be able to do live video chats using your mobile handset on the go.

The Second Life Mobile Phone Concept works on the premise that we often forget about the battery life of our mobile phones, hence run out of juice, just at the wrong time. As a remedy (rather power-saver-option) the phone incorporates a double display. When in active use the AMOLED screen powers up in all glory and in standby mode the E-ink display gets active. This essentially means that the E-ink uses very little energy and the degree of transparency of the display shows how much battery is remaining. The more transparent the display, the less battery remaining.

So besides ultra-low power consumption, the transparent screen offers an intuitive expression: “You’re low on juice so better recharge the phone soon!” Apparently the E-ink uses power to change the degree of transparency and doesn’t add to the battery load.
