This design by Gaspar Ventura is quite appealing. It is an electromagnetic, wireless, aluminium phone called Pophone. It features an LED display and uses brushed aluminium giving it a very ‘retro-modern’ look. The phone’s very interesting feature is that after using it, we needn’t worry about placing the phone back in its cradle, it happens automatically thanks to the electromagnetic properties it features. It uses lithium ion batteries and has one long cable which includes both the power line and telephone line to avoid a messy set up. Brilliant idea!

Curves are back! And when it comes to communication devices, you can bet your teeth they are. We just stumbled across this beautifully designed phone by Fischer Thierry. With all the right cuts and curves, the phone sure stands out of the crowd and is indeed a diamond amongst those lumpy pieces of coal we’re so used to speaking on these days. With a large screen and well placed buttons this one’s missed out the “*”, the “#” and the “0” button though, and we’ve been looking all around for it. On the bad side though, this one is curvy indeed, a bit too much to fit into our tight jean pockets.

The mobile phones hitting store shelves these days just keep getting more complicated, each competing with a host of features and technology packed into little hand-held devices. Some of them do tend to keep it simple though, and do it just right, like the Space Phone. Developed by Russian firm Just5, the phone packs just the basics one would need from a mobile phone. The phone lets you make calls, receive and send SMS
and make heads spin, with its five neon-fruit colors: deep space, pink space, orange space, lime space and menthol space. These colors are a mighty relief to those with eyes sore from looking and silver and black mobile phones commonly seen today.

It is rather strange to call a phone ‘Combination’ – but since this is a concept, anything goes! Combination, as you know by now, is a cell phone concept that will come with a uniform faceplate, although you do have the ability to throw in modular components on the other side of it. These modular parts will make sure that your components are always up to snuff, and a charging dock for the handset also functions as a transmission hub, turning the handset into a normal home phone. The last bit sounds pretty redundant, since a cell phone in the house is far more mobile than a wireless home phone, don’t you think so? Not to mention that you need not remember yet another phone number as part of your contact details. One thing’s for sure – those who want to jump aboard the touchscreen bandwagon will have to give this concept a miss if it ever rolls off the production line.
