A team of South Korean researchers have developed a piezoelectricity-based technology for charging a tablet as the user presses its touchscreen. The tablet, dubbed as Ecopad, truly justifies its name. The device well portrays a great vision of green computing. Thanks to the piezoelectric film embedded below the tablet’s touchscreen, the device will harvest power from the pressure an user deploys on the touchscreen.

It has grabbed a special judges’ award at the Fujitsu Design Award 2011 competition. The competition was based on the title “A Life with Future Computing.” Among 3,000 ground-breaking designs from across the world, judges of the competition appreciated the Ecopad, which was designed by three tech geeks namely, Yonggu Do, Jun-se Kim and Eun-ha Seo.

An user may press his/her tablet’s touchscreen more than 10,000 times a day. That means an enormous amount of power can be produced. Under the new technology, on each pressing, the piezoelectric film can reap a bit of power, which can be saved in the device’s battery. The power later runs the device. It’s a fantastic technology Ecopad presented at the Fujitsu Design Award 2011 competition.

The Ecopad tablet, needless to say, gets rid of the conventional AC adaptor. The nano piezoelectricity film integrated with the touchscreen is enough to produce the required power for the device. The technology will help users enjoy freedom from charging the battery once it is run out. You can produce power on your own as you use the device.

After kitchens, its time that our PCs get the modular trait as well. Juan Esteban Velez has designed one such product, which has been named “modBook“ PC concept. For bringing this creation to life, Juan joined hands with students of Industrial Design Juan Felipe Uribe, Juan Camilo Restrepo and Juan Pablo Castañeda of Pontificia Bolivariana University.

The facade is worth drooling over and comes wedged with a quality to shower three different experiences. The screen can be split into two tablets, measuring 7 inches each, while the base can be swapped into a handy entertainment device perfect for any dwelling. The two screens will individually act as a multimedia and business tool. When all the three parts are coupled they give birth to a specialized product suitable for 3D rendering, video, music edition and many other tasks.

PC concept ‘modBook’ will collide head-on with other products at the 2011 Fujitsu Award. It will endow the user with a power of mobility and entertainment, wedged in one. With so many amazing features, it is ready to take over the powerful PC, tablet and laptop market without any doubt. It has been given cool and attractive looks that will make the onlooker fall in love with the product instantly. The ultra stylish ‘modbook’ will take you on a dream ride with its modular nature.
Put aside your critical ego for a moment and enjoy designer Tommaso Gecchelin’s vision of an Apple MacBook circa 2020. Keyboards, mice and 2-dimensional screens are passe. Hit the jump for the future.

Envisage a computer nearly paper thin, able to shape shift from metal to plastic. Thanks to molecular manufacturing, a micro-lattice nano material enables you to shrink the dimensions to fit into your pocket. Nano technology miniaturizes familiar technologies into thin sheets of composites, each serving a separate function. One layer is photo voltaic for infinite battery life. One layer projects ultrasound waves for tactile feedback. Another layer works like a pelican cam to capture the real world in 3D while a separate layer works like a holographic emitter. And of course, everything is wireless. No ports, no cables. I only have one question.
Notebooks and tablets have become a hot favorite amongst the tech-savvy population. In the crowded world of such gadgets, Philipp Schaake, from Germany, has designed a concept notebook christened Crowd. The computing device can act both as a notebook and a tablet.

The novel idea will ensure a unique interaction between users and their PCs. Just like gadgets in a sci-fi movie, which have sleek facades and a crisp displays, Crowd will make you experience the same activities in a perceptive and rhythmical way. Expecting an important email, but don’t feel like switching on your laptop? With Crowd, connect with online activities of your choice and check important information without even opening the piece of equipment.

Crowd is like an interactive playground, which will make the usage experience all the more enjoyable. It presents an overview of all the online activities in a comprehensible and graphical manner for easy understanding. Different sized avatars are displayed on the screen, denoting website history and friends who are presently online. Each size refers to the frequency at which you interact with a person and the number of times you visit a website.

The two screens are held together by a hinge, which endows the user with a flexibility to pull them apart. Now, either exploit it like a regular laptop or use each screen independently. Chat, mail or surf the net with Crowd, and if someone asks you for an extra laptop, simply snap it apart without much thinking.

The Fujitsu Design Awards allow people to let loose with their imaginations and come up with some of the most amazing concepts that none of us would ever have thought of before. The Keyless Lifebook concept by Laura Lahti is one such novelty. It takes the idea of customizable typing and computing to the next level.

The beauty of this concept lies in its simplicity. It is essentially a touch-based keyboard (with no actual keys), which is completely customizable in whatever way you see fit. So, you can choose exactly which keys you want on your keyboard, and even where you want them placed. You can alter everything from the layout, to the color, to even the orientation! In addition, there are provisions to make using an optical pen easier for drawing, and a full optical mouse trackpad. Did we mention it could also work to type in an array of different languages?
