In the efforts to satisfy our visions of the future, the relationship between technology and sustainability is a pressing issue of concern at all the levels. This is the reason why designers are increasingly moving towards sustainability to bridge that gap. In yet another example of blending technology and sustainability, a designer has created a sustainable mobile communication device dubbed as Infinite. The device clearly looks like a Windows phone 7 device from the interface along with a touch screen feature. According to a brief by the designer, this sustainable mobile phone has a life expectancy of 5 years along with super quick charge time, 8.1MP camera, WiFi, 360 OLED screen and 32GB memory with an upgradeable feature. Featuring the casing in Kenaf bio plastic, this device is fully recyclable and biodegradable. Whilst deeply deploying the pursuit of sustainability, the designer has maintained the essential and luxury user requirements to conform with today’s fashion.

Inspired one of the most trendy fashion accessories, the bracelet, Kiwi designer Chuck Lee has come up with a sleek phone dubbed the “Bricell” that looks more like a piece of jewelry than a gadget. Intended towards female users, the jewelry phone features a simple yet stylish design, allowing easy controls for relatively not-so-geeky-users. Integrating just two touch pads, one for scrolling up and down and the other for clicking OK, to work like normal buttons, the wearable phone also features a hearing piece that works wirelessly with Bluetooth technology. The cellphone works both with and without the earphones. Featuring the body finished in silicon and other parts by injection molding, the concept phone moves the interface up and down on the screen, when the user scrolls up and down on the pad, to enter the menu by pressing the OK button. The Bricell also includes a docking station to place and charge it safely.

In recent years, we have not seen any gadget or device changing as rapidly as a cellphone, which has come a long way, from a custom wireless handset to a hi-tech touchscreen mobile phone, to confer the user with some of the most recent technologies to enhance their experience. While we haven’t even enjoyed the touch sensitive functions fully, Chinese designer Tao Ma has come up with a cellphone concept that runs on runs on a custom AA battery to prolong your chatter without any hindrance. Dubbed the “Rollphone,” the compact cellphone as depicted by its name is a rollable handset with a flexible display that rolls into smaller size to slip neatly into your pocket. Claimed to be the shortest cellphone ever, the Rollphone looks like a camera film that you may either put in your pocket or hang it on your wrist/belt like a key ring. Moreover, users can enlarge the screen, from 45mm to 75mm, to see a video clearly on a big screen.

Creating synergy between human beings and communication technology, Singapore-based designer Sonny Lim has devised a cellphone concept dubbed “Sony-Ericsson 3G” that allows communication in a more natural manner. The 3G concept phone features large touchscreen wherein text and numbers are drawn with your thumb on a nine-dot matrix, which resembles children’s finger-painting. The idea is easy as it is visual and resembles natural writing. Moreover, drawing a character is faster and more natural than searching for the letter on a small keypad. This visual writing principle could also be applied to non-Western alphabets, which could be a major advantage for non-English users.

The trend in concept phones these days is turning retro, which is why we have the “Dial” reminisce the era of the round-dials on phones. The difference however lies in the present concept being touted as a fashion accessory that can be crafted in the metal of choice; giving you the luxury of being, chic, sporty, or uber-rich. A projected light beam in the inner circle impersonates the rotary dial, but to dial a number you need to simply touch it. Quite interesting.
