Many of my tech-savvy friends have been complaining that after spending even a bundle the new iPad isn’t all that they hoped for. Maybe that’s because the first installment of the product had filled their heads with all kinds of possibilities. But what most tablet PCs and similar products available in the market often forget is that simplicity and the ease of use is something that cannot be ignored. This is where the Mobile Internet Device (MID) from designer Incheol Hwang will carve its niche.

The 169mmx79mmx13.8mm device features a large 6.5-inches touchscreen display with a transparent sub display and can be placed over anything (image, shape, object) to find information from the Internet. This second display also allows users to extend the view and serves as a QWERTY keypad because of its touch panel. The candy bar design makes the device sleek and easy to carry while a finger mouse makes it operable from a distance as well.

Supporting many Internet environments, the device positions itself along the lines of tablet PCs in the market. However, the only difference is that it doesn’t promote itself as a cellphone and neither does it boast of being a tablet PC. But what it does brilliantly is that it promises to fulfill all your Internet needs on the go.

No longer do you need to wait and hope that your favorite movie airs tonight. You could simply plug the Boxee Box by D-Link around! This one allows you to watch movies straight from the internet or from your hard drive, without the need of a computer. To get it started, all you need to do is connect the main box unit to your TV. The set comes with a dual sided remote, complete with simply placed multimedia buttons on one side. Flip it over and you have a complete QWERTY keyboard that helps simplify text input too. Also, this one has a neatly shaped structure, with the box seeming to be sunken.

Entertainment using multimedia will soon be revolutionized, if designs like these hit market shelves.

Look at the picture above and try to guess what the product is. Well, let me tell you, if you are thinking it is a modern version of a pocket watch then I am really sorry to say that your guess is wrong. The cute round looking thing called Serendipity is actually a social networking tool.

Man is a social animal and cannot live without interacting with others. From ages communication modes have changed for good, the latest being connecting online and through other digital/ electronic sources. Social networking has become an essential part of everyone’s life. Not only does it help us stay in touch with our loved ones but also is an important mode to find new people or even jobs. In the world of Facebook and My Space, Serendipity by Hoang M Nguyen will shrink the world even further. This handy and lightweight gadget comes with a system that will easily let strangers monitor your likes and dislikes without any hitch. This social interaction tool makes the most of the surveillance concept and creates an interaction which the designer has tagged as coveillance. The device will scrutinize every trivial detail available and present it in front of you.

Not only this, Serendipity comes loaded with applications. You name an application and it is there. The menu is quite incredible and one can scroll through the software by rotating the metal ring. It comes with a full QWERTY keypad which makes typing fun. The tool can be easily customized according to one’s whims and fancies. You can easily play games with people, check out their pictures and music as well. It also has radar that works in a 50 meter radius, so keeping a close eye on someone’s movements is now easy. Spying on someone has never been so simple and fun. Put up your information or your resume and see how easily people will be able to track and getting touch with you.

Mozilla Seabird By Billy May (video)

Look up, peasant, from your soot-stained hands. Drop that shovel into the furrowed ground and gaze upon the magic* that Mozilla has wrought. Concept designer Billy May, working through Mozilla’s “Open Web Concept Phone” project, has gathered community feedback and followed up on some rather mundane visions for the mobile future with this little beauty, the Mozilla Seabird. The completely fictional device has a disturbing initial resemblance to a BlackBerry Storm, but as the video unfolds the functionality is really what sells this thing. The big innovation is the use of dual pico projectors on the side of the handset, which can provide different functionality based on the phone’s orientation: flat on a table they pump out the two halves of a QWERTY keyboard, up on a dock they offer the dual purpose of a large viewing screen above and a seamless projected keyboard below. Other features, like the pop-out wireless pointer / Bluetooth headset are slightly less realistic but no less charming. Now, before you get too excited, you should know that Mozilla has no plans to build this or any phone, they’re just messing around with some fancy 3D software and the bright imagination of their community of users. Still, for the two minutes and thirty seven seconds that the video after the break unfolds, allow yourself to think: “What if?”
