For centuries the rope has been a symbol of community, friendship, and interpersonal communication. Inspired by the icon, the designers of Rope Revolution, a rope-based gaming system, identified popular rope games from around the world, incorporating them into a tangible rope interface where the focus is collaborative play. A compact motion-sensing and force-feedback module allows users to jump rope, fly a kite, ride a horse and a number of physical activities that connect players across virtual spaces.
Sony’s plan to make absolutely sure video gaming involves some sort of headgear for the conceivable future is proceeding apace, with further details of its head mounted display popping up to entertain/horrify us. ”So we have our new HMD – or head-mounted display – which was announced at CES earlier this year, and you can see that we can now get back to where we really wanted to get with virtual reality in the ’80s,” according to SCE Studios exec Mike Hocking.

We don’t know about Mike Hocking, but where we really wanted to go with virtual reality in the 80′s is far far away from it. Which is sort of what happened. “Being in a virtual world where I can see my virtual hands or a virtual gun with all the things we can do in the gaming world is going to be absolutely amazing,” he explained. But don’t fret, if the HMD doesn’t make it to market, there’s always stuff you can stick in your eyes.

“Most of the really exciting stuff is out there in the R&D area at the moment – like having contact lenses with cameras and sensors built-in so that everything you see can be augmented with useful data,” he went on. Wait, those actually sound kind of awesome.

The Kinect software for Xbox is a brilliant and innovative creation, allowing for the production of not only incredibly fun games, but also cool and interesting hacks/mods. A new project, entitled Synapse for Kinect, aims to use this technology to produce music.

Under development by Ryan Challinor, Synapse for Kinect uses the movement of your body to create musical pieces, such as Dubstep as demonstrated in the sample videos (see below). By day, Challinor is a programmer for Harmonix’s Dance Central series, and wanting to expand upon this amazing technology, he decided to make this project his night-time side project. Challinor himself explains it as “sort of a Kinect hack on steroids.”

In the video, Challinor demonstrates the software to create a sample Dubstep song. The software is very easy to use, easy to install and/or mod to your own liking, and has a very easy-to-use interface that connects with Abelton Live and Quartz Composer using the Kinect input. What exactly does it do? Users can select different components within Abelton to control using their body, most likely their hands, and select which axis they would like to use to manipulate said control. In the software demonstration, Challinor uses his hands to control the volume of a sound effect (manipulated using the Y axis, i.e., by moving his right hand up and down), as well as applying distortion to the sound effect (manipulated by using the X axis, i.e., by moving his right hand up and down).

At first glance this seems like a future Sony PlayStation console, an alternative to the Sony NGP. Created by Hirotaka Matsui, the PS Square is a conceptual smart mobile device that’s oriented towards members of the public who are 12 to 14 years old.

PS Square supports induction charging, Bluetooth, possibly 3G and it embeds a microSD card slot. A QWERTY keyboard and a large (probably OLED) screen are incorporated and the device can connect to the PC and TV with ease, via wireless.

The same concept portable device supports social networking, gaming (as shown by the directional pad) and even school work, if you have time for that. Action keys are present as well and an eReader should be on board, too. It’s hard for me to see teenagers doing homework on this device, since I personally would be tempted to socialize and play games on it, but it’s an incredibly cool gadget, to be honest.

For me, the future of gaming technology surpasses the realms of reality. Every designer is keen on offering his renditions of what the future of gaming may look like. The latest rendition of the future of the Nintendo DS by designer Mario Troise is sure to attract the attention of many a gamers. The designer’s vision of the future Nintendo DS consists of a console with some unbelievable features. Mario’s concept portable console consists of a single flexible touch screen. Offering a 3D experience like never before where the 3D graphics pop out of the screen, the mega resolution of this screen promises to change your gaming experience forever. What is more the console itself can be used in many different ways. The console can be used as a board game and played over a surface. Great for multi player games, players can also use both their hands to play.

Complete with motion sensors, cameras (one in front, one in back), GPS, light sensors, this console is what I wish the future of gaming technology to be like. What is more, the cameras recognize any gestures, faces and movement, creating a complete interaction with the games. The designer has envisioned for this futuristic console a fast processor and a system that allows multiple applications and games running at the same time.
A sleek concept, there are no changes in the mechanical buttons like the arrow and round buttons; it is truly a class apart. Besides a volume button on the side, this console includes a stylus for various drawing applications. And lastly it has an SD card slot for games and files.
Designer Camille Jean is bound to send gamers into a tizzy with her Xbox Mini concept. Jean has answered the dreams of millions of fanboys with her mock-up that turns the popular Xbox console into a pocket-sized handheld.

Microsoft is currently the only member of the gaming big three (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) to not have a portable gaming system. The Xbox Mini is designed to fill that void with its unique yet practical design.

The Xbox Mini is a slider console, sliding left and right to close and open. The Xbox Mini features two joysticks and a d-pad, putting it well ahead of the PSP, which was harped on for having only one analog stick, and the Nintendo DS, which was ruthlessly criticized for having none. Overall, the Xbox Mini looks good with my only complaint being the Xbox logo that obscures the right part of the screen.
So you’ve got a budding Pablo Picasso at home, too young to understand the difference between a canvas and your living room wall. You’ve been through some painful hair-pulling experiences every time you see your child “expressing” his art using your newly painted walls before. Well you really don’t need to bother with protecting your walls anymore from your bundle of joy. Just use the KLEXL Interactive Painting concept, a projector that allows digital wall painting by means of an IR tracking camera by Dario Jandrijic of the University of Wuppertal. Using light pens instead of crayons, this one will let your child sketch the length of the room without messing up your walls. And you can save the designs for later viewing too!

Besides just a toy for children, it sure can help interior designers visualize their wall designs too! Good job Dario!
