Quantum Dot Solar Cells

dual-layer solar cells, Green energy
A University of Toronto team led by Professor Ted Sargent has reported the development of the first two-layer quantum dot solar cell, that can be a game changer in the field of solar energy. The team has used two different specification of colloidal quantum dots ( CQS) , one tuned to absorb the visible part of the solar energy, and the other to absorb the infrared and near-infrared part of it, increasing the theoretical junction efficiency from 31 percent to 42 percent.

An Eco-Shower Equipped With Water Filtering Plants

Green technology, Phyto-Purification Bathroom
Simulate living life in the wilds of nature by taking a shower in the Phyto-Purification Bathroom. Using a natural filtering principal, this mix of modern design and nature is a mini eco-system able to recycle and regenerate gray water. A hydraulic system channels wastewater it through a collection of plants, starting the phyto-purification process. Each part of the plant plays a crucial role in cleaning the water — the sand where the reeds are planted provides the initial rough cleaning, and as the water passes through the roots, heavy metals and bacteria are removed. An ingenious concept, this living shower not only aids in water conservation, but also produces additional oxygen. The Phyto-Purification Bathroom is a concept developed by designers Jun Yasamoto, Alban Le Henry, Olivier Pigasse and Vincent Vandenbrouck.

Eco-pulse – A Smart Power Meter

Eco-pulse, green gadget, A Smart Power Meter
As technology advances, our lives are increasingly integrated with electronics and the numerous convenience they provide. However, we are usually unaware of our own carbon footprint and the impact to the environment. Eco-pulse is a concept that aims to cultivate the habits of green consumers in their daily lives. It works by visualizing the electromagnetic fields as pulses on its display and thus allows the discovery of power usage that would otherwise remain hidden to consumers. It is intuitive as it amplifies the electronic pulse of appliances like a stethoscope. When appliances are in standby mode, Eco-pulse also enables the detection of vampire power that is being wasted.
